Binaural beats trick your brain into hearing sounds that aren’t there. Two frequencies are played, one for each ear.  The difference between these frequencies results in a third frequency—the binaural beat.

If a tree falls….

You’ve heard that old adage: if a tree falls in the forest does anyone hear it? Well, this third tone is not actually a tone at all. There is no outwardly emitted sound. The binaural beat is an auditory illusion created inside your mind. Amazing, huh?

Researchers are still trying to figure out what part of our brains are responsible for this cool phenomenon. Some clever scientists believe it is an area of the brain called the superior olivary nucleus (okay, maybe you’re more brain savvy than I am, but I had never even heard of this region).

I use professional composing software called Logic Pro X to create frequencies designed to coax your brain into specific states depending on the goal of the track (for example relaxation, hypnosis, state change, etc.). They call this brainwave entrainment and it has a subliminal impact on your subconscious mind.

Surfing brain waves

Alpha waves occur in the range between 7-14 Hz. This brainwave frequency is often found in deep relaxation, contemplation, hypnosis and light meditation. It is a good starting place to influence the subconscious and make positive changes. It also enhances memory and learning, so it is good for study and self-development.

Theta waves occur in the range between 4 to 7.5 HZ. This frequency is found during light sleep and deeper stages of meditation. In this zone, we have direct access to our subconscious minds. Theta states are excellent to enhance creativity, solve problems, and make profound mental and even physical changes.

Meditation alone (once you can concentrate) will get you to Alpha and Theta states. However, for busy people who don’t have time for a serious daily practice or if you want to go deeper quicker, binaural beats are an excellent support. I’ve been meditating for over fifteen years, but I still use binaural beats to take me deeper in less time.
